WHO ARE MY AMAZING TRAINERS?
JENN BRUYER AND GUNNAR FIELD both have amazing talent, education, and experience in their respective skillsets.
Jenn Bruyer resides in the magical wonderland that is the Pacific Northwest in her beautiful tiny off grid home with her two weenie dogs. Jenn has been immersed in aerial arts since 2008. She is driven by her focus on fabric (silks) and sling (hammock) and her first love trapeze [of all sorts]. She also enjoys exploring cord lisse, cloud swing, lyra, net, rope & harness and anything else someone puts in front of her. She has coached, choreographed and performed around the world including over 30 US states, Italy, Germany, Austria, Canada and Mexico.
As an Aerial Coach, she seeks to provide the highest quality progressive instruction to aerialists of all abilities from novice to professional performer. Her mission as a human is to cultivate a warm, non-judgmental learning environment that fosters community, to build physical and emotional strength within the individuals who participate in this environment and methodically construct a vehicle by which to create art.
Jenn will focus primarily on trapeze at this retreat.
Gunnar Field has spent the last 25 years training and teaching contortion and acrobatics. He has studied and performed in Mongolia, China, Russia, Israel, and the U.S., which has provided him with a unique insight for teaching contortion and choreography. Gunnar utilizes this worldly knowledge while creating his own style of integrative and active flexibility techniques. As a coach he interacts with his students through positive empowerment, his upbeat sense of humor, and high energy. For the last 5 years Gunnar Field has been based out of the Pacific Northwest.
His goal as a coach is to help students gain a clear understanding of muscle isolation and activation while they deepen their flexibility and poise.
Gunnar will focus primarily on flexibility, handstands, and flexi aerial hoop/ lyra skills.

WHY TRAIN IN COSTA RICA?
• Costa Rica is a Blue Zone! Blue Zones are regions of the world where people live much longer than average. Residents of these places produce a high rate of centenarians, suffer a fraction of the diseases that commonly kill people in other parts of the developed world, and enjoy more years of good health. The people inhabiting Blue Zones share common lifestyle characteristics that contribute to their longevity.
• Pura Vida! If there is anything that will teach us to chill out, it is immersion in Pura Vida lifestyle. As soon as you land in the plane, you will notice that the culture says SLOW DOWN! Figure out what is important, and get in balance!!!
• You just can’t make the time and keep focus in your own city life. Costa Rica always teaches us what is the most important for our happiness. She has a way of making us slow down and listen to the birds, meditate with the waves, and marvel at the earth’s beauty. There’s a magic in the jungle that causes us to reflect on our own lives and what really matters, and what we can leave behind. Leaving our life behind for a week can give us great focus and great insight!
• Wellness through the winter! If you live north of the state of Florida, you could use some Vitamin D in the winter! Just a week getaway can reduce seasonal mood disorder and help you combat the germs you come into contact with in busy city life!
• Warmth and moisture for winter bodies. Let’s take advantage of the heat and soak up the moisture with our skin and refresh from the dry heating in our winter homes. Moist heat is also great for healing muscles and many body pains can subside or heal in this environment. (besides, there’s great massages just a step away for $25-35!
• Fresh organic food and clean water! No kidding, the USA food supply is in a terrible state. The water isn’t as clean as we pretend either! You might drop 5 pounds of weight just because the food is actually organic and the water is actually clean! Otherwise, we will be eating some amazing food which will end up most likely cleansing the body anyway!
SOUNDS AWESOME, HOW DO WE GET THERE?
We will make it EASY! You will fly into an airport and get scooped up by our retreat guides! Door to door, you have nothing to worry about. However, traveling to Costa Rica requires a passport. We are happy to help you navigate the cheapest, most practical solutions.
You will fly into SJO airport for an arrival by 1pm Costa Rica Time. We will leave on a shuttle at 3 pm for the retreat center, where we will take a leisurely ride down the coast. When we arrive, we will have dinner and opening circle. If you can't find a flight before 1pm, you can stay at a wonderful luxury hostel we recommend for about $25 the night before.
On checkout day, you will be shuttled back to SJO. Please book your flights for AFTER 5 if possible.
WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE LIKE?
We will pick all guests up from our meeting place at SJO Airport and take a 3 hour ride down the beautiful jungle coastline in private shuttles to our retreat center, Danyasa.
Danyasa is a beautiful retreat center with aerial rigging for up to 17 spots in it’s open air studio. Bamboo flooring makes for a perfect yoga and dance center with mirrored wall and altars all around us. Most of Danyasa is made from containers and Bamboo, with well appointed, air conditioned rooms centered around a pool and lounge area with communal kitchen. Some of my favorite dance parties have been in the Danyasa studio, and they also have a fabulous boutique.
We will eat dinner and assign rooms on arrival for guests to settle in to a week of adventure! The beach is just around the corner, and the small town of Dominical is full of wonderful healing, massages, hair and nail salon, shopping, and amazing food! There is plentiful nightlife and music available within this town, just across the way. It is truly an expat’s dream.
The first morning we will wake up and have breakfast served to us and hit our flexibility/ handstand classes! Afterwards we can opt in for a yoga class or use our free time to catch the waves and explore! We have free time every morning so you can catch the best of the day surfing on a rental board or finding an adventure!
We reconvene at noon for lunch at Danyasa (or you can choose to have it on your own at the many nearby cafes). Then we will use the shaded studio to hit trapeze classes and aerial hoop classes! Get ready for heavy training and as much rest as you need! You can opt in or out of any class. Teachers will pace you as well. The magic of the jungle is how the heat and water and purity of the food and water will make you less sore than you may experience in USA.
We will break every day to return to mother ocean and watch the sunset right into it’s Pacific waters. The ocean is 80 degrees all year and foamy, clear, and beautiful. We will probably drive to a few beaches as well just because… We can!!! THe Bahia Bellena is one of my favorites, with a glorious whale tail shaped sandbar with the tide coming in on each side.
After sunset we will clean up for dinner and have it out on the town. Often there are live bands and great atmospheres to take advantage of!
Midweek we will take an excursion day and not train in the air. The mouth of the Baru river meets the ocean right here, and that means so many waterfalls are nearby! In fact, my favorite waterfall, Nauyaca. We will ride uphill 2.5 kilometers to a stunning waterfall where we can swim and play. We will have lunch there and ride home. Optional (free) Thai yoga / massage group class is a great way to rejuvenate, get dinner at Danyasa, and fall fast asleep for the rest of the week’s training.
We will definitely get some photo shoots in, and (temporarily) rig in a tree beachside if we have to! We will also do a performance jam for each other to show off our skills and dive deep with each other as witnesses. As we make new friends through this week, we will dance and play, and really experience training and each other at our best. On Departure Day, we will pack and shuttle back to the airport with full hearts, full bellies, and lots of new moves and inspiration!
HOW DO I PACK FOR THIS ADVENTURE?!
Pack your bags for a great time doing all the things you love! Pack light and bright, for a sunny time, for aerial training, and to look fabulous while you lounge by the pool, on the beach and make new friends everywhere.
Here’s our list of ‘must pack’ for this adventure:
Your US Passport (90 day Visa given on entry)
Personal Medicines/Prescriptions (there is a pharmacy and doctor nearby as well)
Headlamp / flashlight (a must for the jungle)
Swimsuits (at least 2)temperature is about 85 degrees, you will want to get wet three times daily for sure!
Sunscreen and Bug Spray
Hat/ umbrella/ scarf to keep cool and out of the sun
Adventure Shoes (Sneakers or Trekking Sandals) and Flip-Flops for beach
A closed toe shoe for hiking/ horseback and weary feet
Yoga/Aerial clothes (at least one per day- the humidity and heat will make silk burn more likely and worse- cover up in light fabrics!)
Summer Dresses or Casual Evening clothes (there are dinners and nightlife!)
A look for a photoshoot! poolside, in studio, or hanging from a tree... it'll happen!
Camera (But we got ya)
Note taking materials for classes.
It may be best to pack in backpacks rather than rolling suitcases for Costa Rican terrain.
An open mind and smiling face
