WHO ARE MY AMAZING TRAINERS?
Trapeze, Silks, Partnering, Aerial Yoga, Yoga, Thai massage Bullwhips, Fire...
Originally a Lingerie, Apparel and costume designer, Melissa let her love of music carry her into dance and ultimately found aerial dance. She now finds herself performing on stages, in theaters, galleries and nightclubs much like the performers she once costumed. Melissa enjoys the spotlight and a breathless audience, hearing the surprise and screams coming from a crowd or watching the lights dance on her skin while she defies gravity. Most of all she aims to be an expression of beauty, music, or theme touching the audience in a striking, memorable and inspiring way. While Melissa believes that she is an aerial dancer above all choices of apparatus, she hopes to repopularize trapeze as a highly dynamic apparatus through her work and videos.
As a trainer, Melissa has developed her own modalities for teaching and believes this to be one mark of a safe teacher who invests time, thought, and experience into their students. She loves to coach and choreograph and create characters with her students as she sees them grow into their abilities. She views her training as having holistic approach and while she values expression, she demands intentionality with form, effort, and gesture.
Melissa is founder of Dances In Air, which has released the first trapeze teaching dvd, and she teaches at festivals around North and Central America, and hosts her own aerial retreats in January and February every year in Costa Rica!
Silk, Partnering, Aerial Yoga, Yoga...
Amber Monson is the founder and owner of Sky Gym. She has performed all over the world and trained with the top aerialists in the country, including former Cirque du Soleil artists. Her background in ballet and rock climbing prepared her for her journey into aerial work. In 2006 she watched a performance by off-duty Cirque du Soleil aerialists at a rave in NYC.
“I got chills the first time I saw an aerial fabric act. It was one of those moments of clarity, where I knew that someday it would be a huge part of my life.
I love the mystique of fabric. To me it represents the essence of a strong woman; the flowing forms made by the fabric symbolize grace and beauty, the incredible tensile strength of the material symbolizes strength of will, and the dramatic height represents courage and focus.”
Amber grew up with artists for parents, and has always been drawn to a creative lifestyle, yet she graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Product Design. After a few years in the work-force she decided to risk her day-job in exchange for pursuing what she really loved. Amber is dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle of nutrition, exercise, and exploration.
“I can’t decide which is more fulfilling to me, performing aerial or teaching it. I love coming up with incredible new performances and challenges, and being able to inspire my audience to go pursue their own passion. But I also love the smile of a student who just realized that they are stronger and more skilled than they gave themselves credit for. I am incredibly grateful to my students and my trainers for allowing me to make aerial dance my life.”
Brandon Ross (Climbing Instruction and Guide)
Brandon became our newest partner in paradise at our last retreat in Costa Rica. He’s been crucial in planning our Thailand retreat by scouting the country for months, looking for the best climbing and aerial options. With 20 years of climbing experience, from the boulder fields of Horse Pens 40, AL to the multipitch big wall climbing of Potrero Chico, Mexico, climb with confidence knowing you have the guidance needed to have an amazing experience. Not just an avid rock climber, Brandon is also a teacher, art director, juggler, musician, puppet maker, photographer, and performer. And jungles are his favorite.
SOUNDS AWESOME, HOW DO WE GET THERE?
See the travel information on our FAQ! You will fly into an airport and get scooped up by our retreat guides! Door to door, you have nothing to worry about. However, traveling to Thailand requires a passport and some medical preparation. The FAQ will outline all of this and we are happy to help you navigate the cheapest, most practical solutions.
WHAT ARE THESE COMFORTABLE JUNGLE ACCOMMODATIONS?
Superior accommodations with authentic Thai design and simple, up-scale presentation. Rooms will have AC.
Two beds are in all shared rooms, and private rooms are available upon request for a surcharge. Rooms include seating areas, private bathrooms, and more.
SO, WHY ARE WE GOING TO THAILAND?
Railay/Tonsai Beach is located in the southern part of Thailand where the Krabi peninsula's fairytale limestone formations come to a dramatic and scenic climax, the ultimate gym for rock-climbing fanatics. Monkeys frolic alongside climbers on the gorgeous crags, while down below some of the prettiest beaches in THE WORLD are backed by lush, tropical jungle.
Thailand is a beautiful country with a fascinating history and culture. Thailand’s national slogan “The Land of Smiles” is true. The Thai people are warm, helpful, friendly to foreigners and couldn’t be more accommodating. With only a few Thai words and phrases and a few rules of the road to follow, adventuring in Thailand will be an experience you’ll never forget.
Our adventures will be happening during Thailand’s dry season. The South Thailand/Krabi area can still be hot and humid. In Thailand, DRY really means less rain than usual. If you enjoy a mildly hot, humid day in the southeast, you’ll be very comfortable.
Eating in Thailand is a dream come true. World renowned, Thai food is unbelievably delicious and varied. From a whole fried fish with Thai chili sauce, to the countries famous sweet and spicy Pad Thai, the meals you’ll experience are an appetising treat. Always fresh, with a big lean toward vegetables, fruits, rice and seafood, Thai cuisine is a gourmet's delight as for both the vegan, vegetarian and omnivore alike.

PREREQUISITES FOR AERIAL WORKSHOPS:
Dances In Air can accommodate any level in silks and trapeze. However, you may get more out of your class time if you are not a total beginner. We often suggest 6 classes ahead of time.
We will always have two ACE certified teachers per class of 10-15 students and use ACE teacher guidelines of ratios of people in the air.
Generally, that means beginners get one teacher while intermediate/ advanced gets one teacher. If there is an imbalance, we will have another teacher assist. We survey students and have phone conversations with them to understand their goals and tailor our workshops that we have developed for their abilities and interests. There is always vocabulary, sequencing, creative expression, and theory. Melissa and Amber have taught a number of successful performers and teachers, as well as many beginners and intermediate students. As professional teachers and performers, it is our goal to give you the very best of our selves in this retreat, and some unique material and experiences that you will carry with you as skill and inspiration for many years. We will of course, have times when we rig in beautiful outdoor locations with professional photographers so you can show off some of those skills to the world.
PREREQUISITES FOR CLIMBING WORKSHOPS:
18+ Years of Age
Rock climbing experience - Min. 5.7(5a) grade (Indoor or Outdoor)
Belay experience (Top-rope or Lead Belay)
Able to tie “Figure 8” knot
Able to demonstrate safe and competent climbing and belay abilities.
Fulfill recommend local climbing GYM time to complete experience requirements.
